Around the Statehouse

(The Associated Press) -- The North Carolina Retail Merchants Association and Keep North Carolina Beautiful campaign unveiled at the Legislative Building a statewide effort to encourage recycling of the nearly ubiquitous plastic grocery bags.

The campaign is called "A Bag's Life." Consumers can go to a Web site to type in their ZIP code to find out locations for nearly 1,200 groceries and retail stores where they can drop off the bags. Andy Ellen with the merchants association said the group's members are participating in the public-private partnership to take a leadership role in the state's recycling policies. The Legislature has tried to discourage the use of plastic bags on the North Carolina coast through a 2009 law to preserve environment and protect wildlife.
