Plastic bags star in award-winning video

The hard-working folks in Centre County, PA, have collected another accolade. This one is for a cute and quirky video submitted to the Recycling Film Fest at the state Recycling and Organics Conference last week.

If you have four spare minutes, take a look at “Plastic Bags — The Movie.” It took second place, but is a clear winner where The Bag is concerned.

Produced by Amy Schirf, education coordinator for Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority and Mimi Joy Cooper, with the Centre Region Council of Governments, the lively clip chronicles the eight-week Plastic Bag Challenge with State College area schools last winter and spring.

The object of the competition was to teach students the importance of recycling their plastic bags — and have a little friendly competition, too. With the help of seven partners, including A Bag’s Life, 16 schools and 4,000 students collected 360,384 bags. Exactly.

If you’re interested in holding a Challenge like they did in State College, the video will give you some good ideas. The program got great exposure on Facebook, magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, Twitter and blogs.

And kids learned to recycle plastic bags!

With America Recycles Day approaching on November 15, a school-wide or county-wide plastic bag Challenge presents a great teachable moment. Give us a shout at to find out how we can help.

And take a look at the video to see how Mimi and Amy managed to climb a mountain of bags and have a ton of fun along the way.
