Students around the Dallas Independent School District have been busy taking tests and studying. But they also have found time to decorate their plastic bag collection boxes before Earth Day arrives.

We asked the City of Dallas to get in the fun, since they are big sponsors of A Bag’s Life Plastic Bag Collection Competition. The school that brings in the most bags and wraps by April 21 wins a Trex Company bench and bragging rights for being the greenest recyclers!

To spice up the last few weeks of the competition, we asked the schools to decorate their boxes for a chance to win a pizza party.

Mayor Pro Tem Monica Alonzo came out to help students at Lorenzo de Zavala decorate their box. When finished, it told us a cute story about recycling and even used the word hero. And who doesn’t like that?

Councilmember Jennifer Staubach Gates visited Preston Hollow Elementary to check out what students were up to with their box decorating assignment. They used paint on their boxes and it was tough work. Afterwards they wanted a picture to show what a great job they all did.

Meanwhile, students at Lakewood Elementary were in it to win it. Check out this funky wonderful robot they assembled to show their artistic talents and recycling savvy. We particularly like the bags hanging from this dude’s arms. That’s a rockin’ robot for sure.

Not to be out-done, Pleasant Grove Elementary students were ready for spring. The butterflies and happy children holding hands put a smile on our face. If you listen closely, you can almost hear the sound of birds telling us Earth Day is almost here.

All four schools did such a fantastic job, we awarded each a pizza party. Happy Earth Month!
